- Notes
- The post-Impressionist painter and printmaker Maurice Victor Achener was born at Mulhouse in Alsace, eastern France. Achener studied at the Strasbourg Beaux-Arts, and then in the ateliers of the engraver Peter Halm and the painter Ludwig von Loefftz in Munich. He also studied with Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris. Achener was taught the art of wood engraving by Herbert Lespinasse and Jules Germain. Maurice Achener exhibited with the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1914, and also with the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Arts Décoratifs. Achener was particularly close to his neighbour and friend, the etcher Paul-Adrien Bouroux, and when Bouroux's eyesight began to fail in the 1950s often assisted him in creating his final etchings.
